A Tribute to Ian – The True Spirit of Active Aging

Our beloved instructor Ian has recently stepped back from his role at Yuki Health and Happiness, after many years of inspiring older adults to stay active.

Ian has always been passionate about helping people understand the importance of staying active and living well. His energy, encouragement, and deep understanding of movement have touched so many lives. His enthusiasm for teaching and sharing the joy of exercise never faded.

Just before stepping back from his role, however, Ian faced a major challenge. He caught a virus that developed into influenza B, then pneumonia, with water in his lungs and blood clots. He spent three weeks in hospital. When he finally came home, he could barely walk. His body was stiff and painful, and even simple stretching was a struggle.

So Ian started again — from the very beginning.

Simple movements.

Holding onto something for balance.

A small squat.

Lifting his heels.

He realised how important it is to keep the legs strong. Losing strength and balance made him afraid to go out, knowing that one fall could cause serious injury. Through this experience, Ian gained a new understanding of how hard it can be for people to do what once seemed “easy.”

But he also discovered something powerful: every small movement matters. Even the smallest exercise can change how we feel, how we move, and how we live. His recovery reminded him — and all of us — that it’s never too late to start again, and that staying active is one of the most important choices we can make.

Ian’s experience has made him even more passionate about his lifelong mission — to help others move with confidence, strength, and joy.

His journey reminds us that active aging is not just about fitness; it’s about resilience, courage, and never giving up.

Thank you Yuki for sharing your amazing Inspirational story with this person to us all.

I was touched by your beautiful thoughts and words. I was thinking, if I might be your oldest participant with your water based exercise classes from the beginning when you started with this Village’s Wellness Centre. Cheers.
